Dahon bike bags

Folding bikes are pretty popular modes of transportation for city streets these days. The only problem is that every business isn't as accommodating about bringing a bicycle inside, even when folded. Instead of forcing riders to park bikes outside, folding bike manufacturers have developed a series of bags and covers to conceal the folded package. This way, a folding bike can be checked in a coat check at a nice museum without any questions asked!

Dahon has a wide range of folding bikes, and not surprisingly, a wide range of folding bike bags and covers. Since each one of these bags has a specific use, we decided to outline some cool features about each bag, to help riders pick the right one for their bike. Read about Dahon's folding bike bags!

Xootr Kick scooter addiction

A few years ago I bought my first Xootr kick scooter. Little did I know, this little scooter I bought for recreation would lead me down a path that would lead to dependency and addiction - to a scooter! I found that I just couldn't go anywhere without it!

Maybe it's the convenience of the lightweight deck or the easy fold-up package, but I almost never leave the house without my Xootr scooter. Is it an addiction? Maybe. Is it unhealthy? It certainly beats walking! Read about my spiral into Xootr Scooter Addiction.

Bionx bike motor

The world of electric bikes is divided firmly between two groups of riders: those that prefer a smooth pedal-assist motor, and those that are looking for the cruise of a throttled ebike. Many times, looking solely for one aspect of the bike can be polarizing, and many great electric bikes are overlooked by prospective customers. This is a big mistake because what one bike may lack, it can make up for in many other places

For a person open to alternative options, the BionX electric bike motor kit has both modes of operation built into its intuitive system. It has four levels of intelligent pedal-assistance, as well as a powerful thumb throttle. In addition to being built into many electric bicycles, the BionX motor kit is available as an electric conversion kit for a standard bike. BionX electric bike motor kit

Looking for an electric bike, but can't decide between a smooth pedal-assist motor and a powerful throttle? That's okay - this is one of the primary concerns of most people in the market for one! We find that most people prefer one or the other, depending on how they plan to use the bike. While a pedal-assist motor keeps the ride more like a standard bicycle, a throttle can provide a boost of speed that is convenient when the rider gets tired.

Luckily, the engineers that came up with the BionX electric bike motor kit have found a way to incorporate both options into a single system! This unique conversion kit has four levels of pedal-assistance, and a thumb throttle for those troublesome hills. It's the best of both worlds! Read more about the Two Sides of BionX!

kick scooter mobility

Walking around Central Park in the past few years, I've noticed that one particular trend seems to be growing exponentially in the past few years: the kick scooter. Not only for kids, but now even parents are riding adult scooters as a way to keep up with their kids. Entire families scoot around the park every Sunday, and the numbers are growing. It seems like kick scooters are becoming one of the more popular forms of urban transportation, since they're so lightweight and compact.

Talking with a few owners of these scooters, I've found people with physical disabilities who are using kick scooters as a mobility aid! It seems a bit dangerous to me, but John (a sixty-year-old man with limited use of his legs) assured me he had been using a kick scooter for eleven years and his doctor even recommended one as a form of exercise! Who knew? Kick scooters as mobility aids are a practical - and pretty novel - concept!

folding bike frame design

Folding bike frames vary widely in both looks and feel. What makes one folding bike frame different from the next? How can you tell a quality folding bike frame from one that might as well be made of plastic? A lot goes into folding bike design and the frame has a good deal to do with the ride quality.

Dahon folding bikes fold in half, whereas Birdy folding bikes and Bromptons fold in thirds. The Xootr Swift has only one hinge which is locked by the seat post whereas the Brompton has 3 hinges. What Goes Into Folding Bike Frame Design?

Comparing Birdy folding bikes and Bromptons

Birdy folding bikes and Bromptons can seem similar at first glance, and if you asked most people they probably wouldn't have a very clear idea what makes these two top of the line folding bikes different. Well that's exactly why I've written this article. Let's take a point by point look at what makes a Birdy folding bike different from a Brompton.

We'll start with the folded sized of these two folding bikes and then move on all the way to how they look. Step trough electric bikes

Many big bike companies distinguish between their models by labeling them as "male" or "female" bikes, distinguished by the frame geometry. A sporty, top-tube bike, like a triathlon bike, is considered masculine, while an upright, step-through bike is considered feminine. However, in the world of electric bikes, we seldom see such distinctions.

One of the reasons is the combination of the two styles. Many electric bikes have a top tube that is much lower, so they are easier to mount and balance than standard bikes. These step-through electric bikes are perfect for men and women alike. Read about these new electric bikes that break the gender barrier.

Top of the line electric bike by OHM in Canada

Although many models of electric bikes that we carry at NYCeWheels are designed for commuters, we talk to the occasional mountain biker that needs to add some electric power to their rough trail ride. The two models to choose from, the OHM Urban and the OHM Sport, both have really great components, right down to the pedals, and can take rough riding better than any other electric bike. They also utilize the amazing BionX electric motor kit. Read a bit more about the Tough OHM Electric Bikes and get yourself one of the toughest electric bikes around.

A "light-weight" electric bike is almost unheard of - most of these motorized bikes weigh about fifty pounds! Wouldn't it be nice if the powerful electric motor could be combined with a compact, lightweight frame like a folding bike? Kick scooter are also mobility scooters - sort of..

The invasion is upon us. Hoards of them zip around the city streets. They're in parks, on the subways, and in trains. They can move three times faster than a human, and are so small that they often go unnoticed. That's right, they can even be in your office, your classroom, or your own backyard!

What am I referring to? The explosion of kick scooters in New York City! Kids and parents alike are now riding the two-wheeled vehicles, and you'll spot them everywhere from Central Park down to Brooklyn. It seems like everyone is using a kick scooter to get around rather than walking. I've even talked to a few older people that are using kick scooters as mobility aids! Their doctors recommended it! I guess it's time to check out some kick scooters and see what the craze is about.

Chinese Electric bike for food delivery

There's not a single Chinese food delivery guy in New York that isn't riding an electric bike. It's practically a given that these bikes are battery-powered, and they're also covered in spray paint, cardboard, and electrical tape. What makes this electric bike different from other electric bikes sold in retail stores? And why do they look like they've been through a war zone?

We stripped away some of the cardboard to take a closer look at the Chinese delivery electric bike. It turns out that, under all the decor, these bikes are not so different after all. In fact, in order to survive on the streets of Manhattan every day, they have to be built like tanks. Read this article and see what some of the toughest delivery guys in New York are riding.

Electric mountain bikes

The ups and downs of a bumpy mountain bike trail can get exhausting, especially as you get older. The stamina and endurance required to finish many mountain bike trails can only be achieved by someone in the prime of their life. This can be discouraging for an older individual who is passionate about the sport.

Add some electric motor power, and now the hills and trails are no longer an issue. Set the assistance level on the handlebars and the motor will help you pedal along. Electric mountain bikes are available as fully-loaded complete bikes, or you can add an electric conversion kit to a pre-existing bike to give it an electric boost.

Ecobike Vatavio, folding electric bicycle

There's some stiff competition in the electric bike market these days. Department stores are carrying bikes that cost less than $500, and electric bikes can be purchased over the internet. It's tough for a small shop to compete with all of these big retail chains. At NYCeWheels, the stock has been narrowed down to Lithium-based bikes only - the best that's out there. These bikes go for 15-20 miles before they need to be recharged, and are much lighter than their cheap counterparts. The downside? Price tag. They're much more expensive.

So out of the Lithium-based bikes, what is the most affordable? One great choice for commuters is the versatile Ecobike Vatavio folding electric bike. It's lighter than most other electric bikes, and can be folded up and carried in a bag for train rides. It's a pretty great deal for the price, and you won't find many other electric bikes out there that have this kind of performance. Read about the Affordable, Portable Ecobike Vatavio.

Bags for folding bikes

Many places are still not okay with folding bikes. They're just not acceptable in fancy restaurants, hospitals, or museums. Maybe that's why many manufacturers have come out with a line of covers and bags to conceal their bikes, so you can still take the bike anywhere you want without any trouble.

Dahon folding bikes, in particular, have a plethora of different bags and covers that all serve a specific purpose. There are thin covers that can fit into small saddle bags, and tough airline cases that can really take a beating. We outlined all of the different Dahon folding bike bags, and a few unique uses for each one. Check them out and pick the best one for your bike!

Why should I get a bike with motor?

With the improvements in Lithium battery technology, a bike with an electric motor is now a perfectly viable form of everyday transportation. The average battery will last over twenty miles on a single charge, and many people are switching over to electric bikes as a replacement for a car.

With better technology comes more manufacturers, and with more manufacturers comes a bigger selection of bicycles with electric motors. Many of them are still heavy-duty powerhouse ebikes, where the rider just pulls a throttle and takes off, like a motorcycle. Others are now utilizing super-lightweight pedal-assist motors, where the rider gets proportional power, depending on how hard they pedal. Some people may prefer one over the other, and it can be difficult to choose without some background knowledge. To help, we've outlined some key features in three diverse bikes with motors. Read about them and decide for yourself!

I mean, with such a beautiful design and such wild color selection to choose from it's no surprise that Bromptons are so artsy. Motorized bikes and obesity

Obesity is one of the biggest problems facing Americans today. Literally. Making new laws against fast food and saturated fats just aren't going to change people's habits. There needs to be a shift in the American mindset in regard to exercise. One way to solve this chronic problem is a motorized bicycle. I know, it sounds counter-productive, but think about the overweight people in our country. The prospect of riding a bicycle to work is not an option. It's difficult, sweaty, and takes a lot of energy. Essentially, it's not a fun activity.

Now, substitute a motorized bike for a car. It increases heart rate, speeds up your metabolism, and leaves a person feeling invigorated. It's a daily dose of exercise without the sweat and strain of a regular bicycle. Read about how motorized bicycles help to fight obesity and you'll be surprised to learn that electric bicycles are not made for lazy people.

Tandem bike, powered by electric motor

The two-person tandem bike has almost become a novelty vehicle. With four pedals, two seats, and a long frame, these bikes are almost exclusively seen on beachside boardwalks. They're a lot of fun for a long stretch of flat riding, but try to take this up a hill and you're in for some frustration. It's just not that great on hills with an extra rider.

This is where an electric bike conversion kit comes in. We compared the two types of vehicles in our Electric Bike vs. Electric Car article. If you want to electrify your next vehicle, see if the advantages outweigh the costs before you make your decision.

the elctric motor wheel

One of the biggest questions we get about electric bike motor wheel kits is "Is this going to be safe to put on my own bike?" This is a perfectly valid question, as a bicycle bought from a department store is probably not the ideal candidate for an electric bike motor. The power in the motor is just too much for the rickety cheap frame.

There are a few other safety concerns to look out for, such as getting a bike tuned up if it has been sitting around, to the types of wheels, tires, and brakes that could improve the condition of the final electric bike conversion. So dig that bike out of the basement, read through our tips, and decide if an electric motor wheel is safe to put on your bike.

Xootr kick scooter

Commuting by kick scooter can be rough - especially on city streets like New York City. The Xootr kick scooters, manufactured in Scranton, Pennsylvania, are widely considered the best commuter scooters for adults. They have fast, maneuverable wheels, a hand-brake, and strong decks for heavy use. Usually, these scooters can last for years without needing to be serviced or replaced. When it comes down to picking a Xootr scooter out of the five models that are available, it can be a bit confusing. Which of these is the absolute best and most durable model?

Cut from a block of solid aluminum, the Xootr Street kick scooter is a tank. It's the most heavy-duty kick scooter made by Xootr, and it can withstand quite a pounding. If you're worried about your weight, your riding style, or the longevity of your kick scooter, you may want to consider the Xootr Street. There's no kick scooter with this much strength.

Folding bicycle trailer, haul cargo with your folding bike

Living a cramped, fast-paced city lifestyle can be difficult sometimes, especially if you're trying to transport things like tables, musical instruments, or a tool box. Hailing a cab can get pricey, and it's awkward to carry these bulky objects on the subway. The prospect of towing something on a bicycle trailer seems like a good idea, as long as it isn't too heavy and it can detach easily from the bicycle.

With a a folding bicycle and a folding bicycle trailer, compact living is made easy again. The Burley Travoy folding trailer holds up to 60 lbs of cargo, plus it will fold up to the size of a small suitcase. This is perfect for shopping, running errands, camping trips, picnics, or even a bike tour.

Motorized bicycles fight obesity

Burley bike trailer review | folding trailer for folding bikes

I've come to respect Burley bike trailers a great deal since I started pulling the Burley bike trailer. I didn't expect it to be such an all around practical and easy to use accessory, but the Travoy really came through for me. Whether hauling coconuts from Chinatown or delivering BionX conversion kits via bus to Boston the Travoy performed exceptionally well. And it folds! Sweet...
Here is my story and review on the Burley Travoy bike trailer.

A bicycle with motor? Electric motor bikes...

The popularity of a bicycle with motor power has dramatically increased in the past few years. With the efficiency of Lithium batteries, most of these bikes can be ridden for up to twenty miles on a single battery charge. This is further than most people travel in a single trip. The bikes with electric motors on the market range from lightweight, pedal-assist bikes to heavy-duty powerful machines. Depending on the rider, one may be preferred over the other. What is the trade-off with weight and power in bicycles with electric motors? Check out our comparisons and decide for yourself!

The best electric bike kit

Riding a bicycle to work everyday is great exercise, emission-free, and lots of fun. However, due to the amount of sweat or effort involved, many people are unwilling to ride a bicycle as a commuter vehicle. With new developments in electric bike conversion kits, a bike can now be converted to a viable electric commuter. Depending on the rider, there are different opinions about the best electric bicycle kit. Some prefer a twist-and-go ebike, so there is no pedaling or sweat involved. Others enjoy more of a bicycle feel, with a little bit of added assistance from an electric motor. There are so many different options to choose from, that almost anyone can find the best electric bike motor kit.

The best electric bike kit?

For everyday commuters, picking the best electric bicycle kit is a choice that depends solely on the rider. Some prefer a throttle-powered ebike, so they won't sweat on the way to work while wearing a suit and tie. Others prefer more of a hybrid electric bicycle, that assists with their pedal power.

Almost any bike, trike, or recumbent can be outfitted with an electric bike conversion kit, and with the average commuter traveling less than two miles per day to work, electric bikes are a perfectly viable form of everyday transportation. Check out some of the best electric bike kits.

IF Mode review

When I first saw the IF Mode I was in awe. The amazing natural folding mechanism and sculpted lines are even cooler when you see them in action. Unfolding in a mere 20 seconds and easily rolling along when folded, this bike is perfect for the commuter with a high sense of style.

The IF Mode folding bike is by far the coolest looking folder available.

The Sanyo Eneloop electric bike

The Sanyo Eneloop electric bike is quickly turning into one of our best selling electric bikes. Sanyo has just dropped retail pricing to below $2k and $1700 on the entry level Sanyo Eneloop electric bike

We do have a lot of simpler technology throttled bikes as we had for the past 10 years but the consumer is growing up and understands how a lightweight, efficient pedelec bike makes a lot of sense. A lot of our test-riders choose the Eneloop electric bike after trying out different systems.

A pedelec has tons of advantages over a throttled bike but if you are into (moped-like) heavier electric bikes than an eZeebike or A2B Metro might do the trick.

Dahon Boost Electric Bike - just in

The Dahon Boost electric bike has just arrived and is available for test rides and for shipping fully assembled to your home.

This electric folding bike is one of the lightest electric bikes available. Being light does not mean wimpy, this bottom bracket electric motor drives through 3 gears, providing 3 sweet spots (optimum torque through entire range)

Click for the Dahon Boost test results and a short video of this amazing electric bike.
